Scott Elk is an artist who draws from the history of art, recontextualising controversial historical individuals in his History of the World Series of screen prints. At times subversive and always thought provoking, Elk addresses ideas and themes associated with gender and power. Drawing on the long tradition of ‘power’ art, his work has a strong graphic quality interestingly met with an eastern aesthetic with particular reference to the calligraphic arts. Scott has attracted world-wide attention, including being headlined as the commissioned creative force behind the poster images of Sydney’s 2010 Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. Although the work has great depth to it visually, they are serious fun as well.
