Marikit Santiago

While the history of portrait painting is a well-worn track, few young artists render the face with an evocative narrative power quite like Marikit Santiago. An honours COFA graduate who draws upon her Philippine heritage, in all its richness, Marikit focuses on the post-colonial narrative, delivering works that are delicate yet emphatic by drawing on themes centring on the nature of our personal relationships and physical locality, constantly investigating how these inform our identity. Implementing a myriad of techniques, from pyrography to oil based painting and gold leaf application, Marikit is an artist whose conceptual practice is physically infused into the picture. Like the great painters from history, Marikit paints beautiful faces that tell a tale, eloquently delivered through her undoubted skill. Definitely an artist to watch for the future.
