Long-time friends and artistic collaborators created the fictitious persona Doug Bartlett and in doing so redefined what collaborative art was all about in Australia. Anarchic in their attitudes to life and visual culture for years, Nick Morris and Dave Bowers have permeated Australian culture under the radar for a couple of decades through their work with iconic clothing labels like Mambo and Quicksilver. From T-shirts to painting, they have defined a generational aesthetic and now they’re getting serious! The imagery is as raw and intense as ever – just what the mythical Doug Bartlett, guiding alter ego of these two guys, demands. Yet behind the bravado is a highly intellectual approach to image selection and appropriation blended with exquisite line work. In the creation of these works nothing is out of bounds and nothing leaves the studio unless Doug Bartlett says so. Below are limited print editions, signed and thumb printed by the two artists, exclusive to UpRaw.
